Porsche might come up with a Ferrari 458 competitor

Spyder would have a price tag of $845,000 and that would make it the costliest car ever to be sold by Porsche, something that the company had confirmed only recently. There is talk now though that Porsche have some change in mind and they plan to come out with some mid engine supercar in order to compete with the Ferrari 458 Italia and the McLaren MP4-12C. The change of plans is at the moment waiting Volkswagen’s approval.

Mathias Muller, boss of Porsche said, “We’re looking to extend the range. We’ve got an idea to do another mid-engine model. We’re thinking above the 911 but below the 918 Spyder. We have ideas on styling and design, which we will continue to develop in the coming months. We’ll also evaluate the economic side and then decide.”

The new model if built would come in both the roadster as well as coupe version. Price of the car would be pegged at $275,000. In order to get performance enhancement by lowering of weight the car maybe built mostly with carbon fiber reinforced plastic.

In order for the car to give competition to the Ferrari there would be necessity for the car to have at least 550 to 600 HP under its hood. This is so as the 458 Italia has performance figures of 570 HP and 398 lb-ft of torque. The engine on the Italia is the 4,499 cc V8 engine and the MP4-12 car has the 3,800 cc twin turbo engine which gives 592 hp and 443 lb ft torque. Porsche has the 3,600 cc 620 hp water cooled twin turbo flat six that is fitted on its Porsche 911 GT2 RS.
